Atelier Biagetti is the collective name and creative home of Alberto Biagetti and Laura Baldassari. The atelier, which is situated in Milan’s historic canal district, creates distinctive objects, installations and interiors that use the contemporary idea of design as a medium for artistic expression and social comment.
Biagetti, designer, and Baldassari, artist and opera singer, are partners in both life and work and since they joined creative forces have pursued the idea that design, as an essential part of our environment, can be much more than just a balance between functionality and aesthetics. They believe that it has the power to truly enrich life; that what people need is to surround themselves in their personal, work or public space, with objects that are not only functional and beautiful but can also provoke an emotion, a reaction – that enhance the sentient side of life that is ever more elusive in this digital age.
To realize this concept Biagetti and Baldassari have developed a characteristic method of identifying familiar themes of everyday life, analyzing them and decontextualizing their visual elements so as to create a short-circuit between the senses of the body, the preconceptions of the mind and the physical reality of the surrounding environment. Every piece they design has a story to tell, and it is the place in which we put it that gives it voice.
To illustrate the importance of design’s role, Biagetti and Baldassari have developed the concept of ‘Performing Design’. Each new project is presented with an installation reminiscent of a film set in which a cast of non professional actors lives out the story as a tableau vivant. This idea not only reinforces the chosen concept of the project but underlines the fact that it is not just the object that is important but the action that goes on around it.
Each project that the duo undertakes is meticulously pursued from conception to realization, starting with a profound research process, to find the most appropriate colours, materials and manufacturing techniques, whether natural or man-made, traditional or innovative, to best express their creative vision. Thanks to this aspect of its work Atelier Biagetti has created a vast network of small scale fabricators and artisans that together realize their pieces. From the traditional artisans with workshops in the centre of Milan to the small Venetian company – leader in the manipulation of all things plastic and plexiglass, to the historic producers of silk jacquard on Lake Como, Atelier Biagetti prides itself on bringing together the excellence of Italy’s manufacturing tradition and cuttingedge contemporary design to create projects and pieces that delight both the public and their collectors and clients.
