MAPPED PROJECTION + DOME ARCHITECTURE

In our time, planetariums are identified through its structural form and default technological instruments in projecting mapped perspectives through a dome-shaped container. Imagery projections from an under-dome structure have been a default programme for planetarium developments, thereby leaving the science of astronomy to the technological advancement of equipments.

Through technology progression and architectural evolution, one must explore new ideas, new forms, new programmes, and new applications to imagine how one can participate in the study of science through architecture. How can we experience the study of space through architecture?

PARTICIPATE, NOT SPECULATE

A standard planetarium typology requires an empty structure with a concaved roof layer and a mapped projection of images to capture the science of space. The aim of this proposal is to create a planetarium where users of the building will be catered to experience its surrounding architectural elements through space, volume and form – rather than being observers to mapped perspectives.

EXPERIENCING ARCHXIS

Taken from the properties of planetary movement, density, volume, history and interstellar theories, ARCHXIS is observed as an experiential planetarium by transforming the standard typology of projection through sensory design of architectural spaces. This proposal experiments the input of electro chromic glass in designing sensory architecture.

THE INTERGALACTIC EXPERIENCE

To arouse a community’s reaction and interest, the site will be situated within a dense city urban block.

An outer shell cube structure which we’ll call ‘The Halo’ envelopes the entirety of the building. The design of the cube is measured exactly to 10,000 cubic meters – to envision the universe which consists of 10,000 galaxies.

Robust multi-layered levels coated with translucent hues of a ‘stardust’ trail welcome visitors to the development.

The colour of the facade components ranging from a mixture of colours including blue, violet, and red are extracted from the ‘stardust’ concept. As daylight passes through the structure, this cosmic trail changes hues during the duration of the day (or night) which leaves an infinite variety of colour changes similar to a cosmic experience.

By creating layers of components representing the galaxy, users can experience the different dimensions of space through different levels. Reflective textures and materials complete the experience through four different levels – which represents the components of a galaxy; which includes the nucleus, the bulge, the disk, and globular clusters.

These galaxy components are distributed to space exploration activities arranged within different levels of the development.

The first level is a social area to recollect ideas and stories about the existence of the earth’s surface – where visitors congregate and fuse through ‘Meet Aurora’ in a cubed programme. ‘Aurora’, the proposal’s concierge programme, welcomes visitors at the ground level with particle light maps similar to the effect of magnetic poles from the northern and southern hemispheres

The ‘Nucleus’ which is located at the second level is allotted for constellation and asteroids which are played within a series of concave and convex glass blades. This will be possible by means of creating images through electro chromic glass technology – which brings life to sensory architecture and experience. A row of full-height concaved glass panels charged with electro chromic technology called ‘space layers’ runs through the exhibition’s full length to let visitors experience the galaxies’ layered movements.

Located at the highest levels of the planetarium, an array of ‘gravity’ saucers’ float across the third and fourth levels. The ‘Bulge’ and the ‘Globular Clusters’ offers a floating experience and loss of gravity through the galaxy saucer pods. These circular-shaped lounge benches wrap around an electro chromatic floor surface. Textured with reflective surfaces, the concaved walls forms distort images, which create illusion and trickery to the visitors’ visual experience.

Breaking the norms of standard planetarium typologies, the ARCHXIS creates a plethora of boundless forms and interstellar experience for users of all ages.
