Mars is More

The Martian colonization should practice respect for the new planet and use its resources thoughtfully, following Less for More concept by sustainable, minimal and no trace architecture. The foundations stems from understanding Earth and implementing conclusions as phase one of building on Mars.

‘Mars is More’ is based on the pure geometric shape of the circle – it creates utopian urban order in way of equality, community and private surrounding public. The history of circular and radial-concentric design goes back to early days of mankind when the round architectural shape provided a natural sense of unity. Today, the search of planetary life is also the search of not being alone, to which the circular form contributes by providing sense of togetherness.

In an era of rapidly growing data and information the urban space must adjust by being as minimal a visual interruption as possible. The architectural circle is taking shape as white rings with sloped roofs avoiding accumulation of dust and creating lower visible facades for users comfort.

The ring typology allows fractal qualities once placed on the 30° circular grid – same qualities as a unit and as an assembly, functioning on any topographical surface including underground. All circulation is designed according to the grid – motor transportation by electronically operated tubes underground, implementing new Earth ideas, avoiding traffic, pollution and visual overload and anxiety. All street dimensions above ground are functionally comfortable but kept relatively narrow for efficient energy and oxygen distribution.

Due to the Martian gravity, the design is based on the ability of humans to jump higher. Suction Boosters on ceiling corners provide vertical space gap assistance and at the same time serve as fall decelerators. The relief from elevators and staircases creates a much more efficient and compact floorplan.

Consequently, the Martian physical evolution will consist of stronger, more muscular and flexible lower body in addition to longer and broader torso for oxygen storage in a scarce environment. Martian men and women become the same size due to equal social roles and physical activity. The Martian wears a protective skin tight shield from the radiation, dust goggles and mouth and nose cover until evolution transformation completion.

Colonization Phases:

I – Basecamp as a self sustained ecosystem of rings and shells which functions as live-work-play environment, housing 400 humans arriving by two BFR flights. Basecamp size is dictated by BFR payload limitations. In order to prevent the Martian world from using ‘Falcons’ as dimension standard, basecamp will not be continued to next phases.

II – ½ km center grid, consists of larger rings made from local martian materials, mainly by system of 3D printing and melting for re-use. Each ring has different work-play functions at its core along with the aeroponic Mars Farm.

III – 1km center grid and expanding, each ring will represent a neighborhood and eventually a full city. Future removal of dome and outer atmosphere shell according to human adaptation. Transformation of Basecamp into a Martian History Museum by addition of surrounding rings.
